Help us make our NOPA neighborhood even more beautiful by creating more sidewalk gardens! Improving our sidewalk gardens is part of San Francisco's sidewalk landscaping initiative[^1].
Benefits of sidewalk gardens
beautification
absorbing storm water run-off
providing food and habitats for birds and bees
teaching children about nature
providing an opportunity for neighbors to get to know each other through shared maintenance
increasing property values
Many in NOPA want sidewalk gardens, but funds are scarce
Many of our neighbors have requested help from Friends of the Urban Forest (FUF) to install sidewalk gardens outside their property. Unfortunately, the funds to make these happen haven't been available. That's why we're working to raise $50k to help some of the sidewalk gardens become a reality. Once we have the funds available, we will focus on the areas of the neighborhood that have the densest concentration of residents who have requested a sidewalk garden.
How do I help create more sidewalk gardens?
Please contribute to our fundraising by giving whatever you can afford. There are two ways to do this:
Donate to NOPNA with Zelle[^2] (in your banking app or website). In Zelle, send money to
treasurer@nopna.org.
Donate via NOPNA’s PayPal account.
In the “Use this donation for” drop down, select “Sidewalk Gardens”
Sponsorship opportunities may also be available for companies or individuals who are able to donate $3k or more. Please reach out to sarah@bashforddesign.com for more information on that.
Request help for paying for a sidewalk garden
If you would like help paying for a sidewalk garden in front of your property and haven't already requested help from Friends of the Urban Forest, fill out their interest form. Applications filed by June 15th, 2024 will be considered for funding assistance by NOPNA. If you are willing and able to create your own sidewalk garden without funding, visit SF Better Streets’ sidewalk landscaping page.
